Supreme Court ruling on gun law now at play in Boston court

A landmark 2022 Supreme Court ruling involving a New York gun law has begun to undermine Massachusetts’ gun laws, with a Boston Municipal Court judge recently ordering the Police Department to provide a concealed carry license to a man it had deemed a public safety risk.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to remove Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from the presidential ballots in two key battleground states, Wisconsin and Michigan. Mr. Kennedy, an independent, suspended his campaign in August and endorsed former President Donald J. Trump. In emergency petitions to the court, he had mounted a last-ditch argument, saying the states had violated his First Amendment rights by keeping him on.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled 4-3 last week that voters whose mail ballots are rejected may instead cast provisional second ballots in person. This might or might not be a sensible policy, but a dissent says that it’s in “direct contravention” of the election code and “an unconstitutional intrusion.” Next up, the U.S. Supreme Court. The Republican National Committee on Monday asked the High Court to stop the state judiciary from rewriting voting rules two weeks before Nov. 5.

The Republican National Committee on Monday urged the Supreme Court to block Pennsylvania election officials from counting the votes of those who failed to follow the proper procedure when they first submitted a mail ballot. Some voters do not put their ballot in the required outer envelope, or they do not include a signature or a date.
