Supreme Court News Briefs - November 9, 2024
Trump has shaped the Supreme Court, but it could still hinder his agenda
ABC News By Lawrence Hurley
President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitious agenda could face pushback from an institution he has done much to shape: the Supreme Court. With a 6-3 conservative majority including three Trump appointees, the court has spent the last few years buffeted by criticism from the left. But if the justices stick true to their stated jurisprudential principles, the new administration could end up on the losing side at least some of the time, legal experts say.
Leonard Leo, Trump aide Mike Davis spar over Supreme Court retirements
Washington Post By Justin Jouvenal
An influential conservative lawyer who advised Donald Trump during his first term forcefully pushed back Friday on talk that one or more conservative Supreme Court justices might retire after Trump again takes office in January. Leonard Leo, who helped the president-elect select three Supreme Court picks during his first term, said in a statement that discussions of Justices Clarence Thomas, 76, or Samuel A. Alito Jr., 74, stepping down are unseemly.

Together we can hold the Supreme Court Accountable
Equal justice in America depends on an impartial Supreme Court, yet today, our highest Court is compromised. Designed to be a pillar of justice, the Court should stand above political influence, interpreting the Constitution with integrity and impartiality. However, a conservative majority has taken hold, prioritizing personal beliefs over constitutional principles. This imbalance threatens not only specific freedoms but the very foundation of our democracy.
The signs of this crisis are clear. The Court has been plagued by corruption, ethics scandals, and extreme political leanings, casting doubt on its ability to protect fundamental rights. Critical issues such as abortion rights, climate action, and fair election protections now face uncertainty. With this compromised Court, hard-fought gains are at risk of being rolled back, undermining decades of progress toward a just and equal society. We can't afford to be complacent while these extreme rulings erode our rights.
But we, the people, hold the power to demand change. Activists across the country are raising their voices to call for real Supreme Court reform. Congress must protect the Court's integrity by expanding the number of justices, enforcing term limits, and implementing a robust code of ethics. These reforms are essential to restoring faith in the Court and ensuring it serves all Americans, not just a select few.
Here's a list of actions activists can take to advocate for Supreme Court reform:
Contact Congress: Call, email, or write letters to your members of Congress urging them to support Supreme Court reforms, including court expansion, term limits, and a code of ethics.

Support Reform-Minded Candidates: Volunteer, donate, or campaign for political candidates who prioritize Supreme Court reform in their platforms.
Host Conversations: Start conversations within your community or online, emphasizing the impact of Supreme Court decisions on daily life and the need for accountability and reform.
The time for action is now. Each of us has a voice, and every voice matters in the fight for equal justice. In just one minute, you can send a message to your member of Congress, urging them to support reforms that uphold the rule of law. Together, we can demand a Supreme Court that truly represents justice and fairness for all. Join the fight for a, uncompromised Court—our democracy depends on it.
